Why you will fail to achieve your dream physique - the only secret to achieve your goals

So you have started on your health and fitness journey.

You scroll on Instagram and see hundreds of influencers with the physique that you want.

Then you sit there and think,

yeah, I’d like to look like that.

Well,

that really could be a reality, or it could be a delusion that you will fail to achieve.

Let me explain.

The World Of Delusion.

Firstly, most of the things you see online are not as it seems.

The people you compare yourself to are either photoshopped or on some form of performance-enhancing drugs.

It is only a small minority that are all that they say they are.

Sorry to burst your bubble.

There is an incentive for these people to stay in the condition that you see them in.

This can be financial gain from selling products or societal gain from likes or followers.

They have a strong reason to do extreme things to get that physique.

To starve themselves,

to take performance-enhancing drugs,

to remove the pleasures of life.

People need to understand that the dream that they aspire to be is often just a delusion put forth by a social influencer.

The dream is an illusion.

It is not real.

Their results are barely real

(depending on how they got there).

This is what I mean when I say that most people,

perhaps even you reading this,

will fail to achieve your dream physique.

It is because the dream physique you have been sold has a cost that you can’t see beyond simple effort,

or,

It is just a delusion put forth for some form of clout.

So let's set up some real expectations.

The Real World.

Now let’s assume you do find someone that is just ‘all that’.

Maybe it is online,

maybe it is in person.

It takes genuine work and a lot of sacrifice to get the physique that you aspire to be.

That doesn’t mean it is not impossible, this is just an expectation setting.

I have been in this fitness industry for a long time.

As a coach now for 4 years and training myself for 10.

In my experience, the progress you are looking for comes from a long history of effort.

People who genuinely have earned their physique have done relatively simple, perhaps even boring things for a long period.

Choosing a training regime.

Being consistent with it.

Working hard at it.

Over time, this simple formula will have yielded the success that you now see and aspire to be.

The problem lies in the fact that we live in a world of extremes at the moment.

People pouting the most extreme things as being the most beneficial.

This is flawed for many reasons which I will explain.

In A World Of Extremes.

If a little bit of something is good, then a lot should be great right?

Wrong.

A half-hour walk becomes an hour walk which then becomes a 3-hour walk.

A 3km run becomes a 6km run which becomes a 21km run.

Another popular one at the moment,

A 12-hour intermittent fast becomes a 72-hour fast.

People like extremes.

Extremes can feel gratifying because you feel a sense of accomplishment from having to overcome something difficult.

And actually, I quite like them myself.

It is also true that the thing you put effort towards you improves in.

This is just simply the specificity of training (or life).

Without a doubt, 100% focus and effort in a task or area of life go a long way in speeding up the process of development.

This is why extreme measures sell.

They are sexy.

You are not achieving results, it is because you are not doing x.

It is simply the intensity of effort that is stopping you from getting your goal.

However, this is a flawed mentality.

The difference between medicine and poison is often in the dosage,

as the adage goes.

Going further on your runs can be a good thing if you want to try to run further.

But,

If you just keep pushing the dial to try and get some progress, there is often a price.

The more extreme you go one way, the more extreme you bounce back.

What goes up, must come down.

We fortunately or unfortunately have to live with a principle called homeostasis.

Our Internal Environment.

Homeostasis is the idea that our bodies adapt and change to try and maintain a stable internal environment to a changing external environment.

I have seen people do 72-hour fasts (myself included) to then quickly eat back all of those calories the following days.

This is because the satiety signals for hunger go to extremes to compensate for the lack of calories for the 3 days of not eating.

The problem is not in the attempt to lose weight via calorie restriction,

the problem is the drastic change in energy intake.

This is due to an unnecessarily high intensity of effort and destabilising homeostasis too much.

The more extreme a contrast is, the more likely you are to notice it.

If you walk outside on a chill 5-degree day from your warm 25-degree house,

you will notice it.

But if you introduce that change slowly over a long period,

then your ability to detect the changing internal and external environment is greatly minimised.

This is how we adapt and change with time.

In the same way,

the problem with most people is not an effort issue.

People can demonstrate a grand ability to apply intensity to try and change their lives.

It is a consistency and adherence issue.

The Only Secret To Achieving Your Goals.

People mistake the intensity of effort for consistency of effort.

Life is much like a marathon, not a sprint.

The marathon runner can run for extended periods without getting fatigued.

But the sprinter has to stop completely and recover after the short intense bout.

But the total distance covered is much further in the marathon runner.

The idea is the same.

You will go much further by putting in less intense effort,

but more consistently over a long period.

This is how you are guaranteed to get your dream physique.

As I said, I like extremes too.

They do teach you things.

However, they are not a viable long-term solution.

Intensity in one direction requires recovery in another.

So if you truly want to achieve your dream physique,

the only secret to achieving it is to apply effort consistently for a long period.

This is how you are guaranteed to succeed
